Historical background

Our institute starts its history since 1961 when the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering that was later renamed into the Institute of Cybernetics (IC) had been opened. During that time the faculty lineup and an administrative subordination changed not once.

The Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering was founded in Tomsk Polytechnic Institute (TPI) in 1960s when the USSR industry development required the implementation of electric measurement and automation devices at different levels. There was a demand in qualified specialists in automation, electrical measurements and other complementary sciences – electronics, radio technology and others. So, there was the order of the Ministry of High and Vocational Secondary Education of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic “About the establishment of the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering as a part of the departments of Computer Science and Telemechanics, Electrical Measuring Instruments and Mathematical Calculators in TPI since 15.04.1961.”

In 2010 within the universitywide program of reorganization, the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering was reformed into the Institute of Cybernetics (IC) including 6 departments of Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, 2 departments of Mechanical Engineering Faculty, 1 department of Electrophysical Faculty (Department of Computer-Aided Measurement Systems and Metrology), a newly formed Department of Descriptive Geometry and Graphics and Department of Foreign Languages.
