S.P. Buyakova actively develops the scientific direction - ceramic functional materials. Svetlana formulated the principles of organizing the structural-phase hierarchy in non-plastic materials, which made it possible to create a whole class of ceramic materials with a fundamentally new ratio of the "structure-property" parameters. Under the leadership of professor Buyakova were developed porous ceramic materials for endoprosthesis replacement of bone tissue, the principal advantage of which is osteoconductivity and osteoprotection. A spinal endoprosthesis has been developed that reproduces the functional features of the intervertebral disc, the use of which in medical practice allows maintaining the mobility of the spinal column and reducing the level of disability due to diseases of the spine.
S.P. Buyakova actively conducts research in the development of thermal protection elements for space technology and high-energy systems. Under her leadership, a class of gradient ceramic functional materials for highly efficient thermal protection was created. The developed materials are capable of long-term cyclic thermal loading up to 3000 C.
