METHODS FOR TESTING OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS OF NANOMATERIALS METADATA Contact hours: 48 Non-contact hours: 168 Credit rating: 6 Semester: 3 Aims The overall aim of the course is to provide students with methods for testing the performance characteristics of bulk materials and nanomaterials and learn to operate the modern equipment used for these purposes: corrosion properties, thermal properties The Contents 1. Assessment of corrosion resistance of materials. General information on corrosion. General characteristics of assessment methods of corrosion resistance. Methodology of accelerated corrosion tests. Electrochemical methods of corrosion resistance assessment. Potentiometry method. Pourbaix diagrams. Corrosion behavior of nanostructured materials. 2. Bases of thermal methods of analysis. Thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetric. Interpretation of thermograms. Thermal characteristics of processes of melting, decomposition, formation of binary and complex compounds. Use of thermal analysis for determination of thermodynamic properties of substances. Dilatometric method of testing. Determination of the linear expansion coefficient. Study of phase transformations. Thermal behavior of nanostructured materials. LEARNING OUTCOMES (OBJECTIVES) Intellectual skills • Experience the definition of operational properties of materials and nanomaterials (thermal resistance, corrosion resistance) • To determine the thermal properties of materials: CTE, shrinkage, sintering temperature, thermal effects of the materials. • Evaluate the corrosion resistance by means of gravity and microscopy methods • Handle corrosive chart: to calculate corrosion potentials and currents; to describe electrolyte discharge processes, to determine the equilibrium potentials of some reductant and oxidant Practical skills • Operate some equipment for study the kinetics of sintering, linear expansion coefficients • Operate some equipment for determination of electrochemical corrosion parameters: potentiostat, polarography.
