Description of the course
This course introduce the basic concepts and circuits of power supplies. Principles of switch-mode converting and controlling electrical power with high efficiency are presented. Realization of the power semiconductors in the basics circuits of converters explained. Power diodes, thyristors, power MOSFETs, and IGBTs are explained, along with the origins of their switching times and gate driver considerations. A number of well-known converter circuit topologies are explored, including those with transformer isolation. The laboratory work assignments include a one-phase and three-phase rectifier circuits, buck, boost converters and an H-bridge inverter.
After completing this course, you will:
- Understand how to implement the power semiconductor devices in a switching converter
- Understand the basic ac-dc rectifier, dc-dc converter and dc-ac inverter circuits.
