Course Description Discipline/Course: Methods for isolation of biologically active substances from natural raw materials The Basic Educational Program: Biotechnology Institute of High Technology Physics Instructor: Shtrykova V.V., PhD Contact details: email: shvv@tpu.ru Learning Outcomes: This course introduces the student to the chemistry and technology of biologically active substances from natural raw materials Theoretical skills: -know the main classes of natural compounds; -choose basic methods for isolation of biologically active substances from plant material. Practical skills: -use main types of extraction; -use ways of intensification of extraction processes; -use main methods of obtaining essential oils Course Outline: Section 1. The main methods of isolation of biologically active substances from plant raw materials. Section 2. The technology of obtaining the most purified preparations and preparations of individual substances. Lab 1. Preparation caffeine from tea. Lab 2. Preparation of pectin.
