Course Objectives and Content: The syllabus of the discipline “Materials Science and Technology of Structural Materials” is developed for students of Tomsk Polytechnic University. It is intended for the direction 13.03.02 Power and Electrical Engineering.
The discipline includes the following themes:
methods of structural materials production; metallurgy;
physical and technological bases of materials processing;
metal forming by forging, rolling, drawing, extrusion;
metal cutting; electro-physical and electro-chemical processing;
theory and practice of metal processing by casting and welding;
types of welding;
parameters of welding mode; control and defects of welding joints;
oxygen cutting of metals;
physical foundation of materials science;
properties of materials and their connection with chemical composition, crystalline structure, phase and structural state;
mechanisms of materials strengthening and softening;
classification of structural materials (including materials for energetics);
work hardening, recristallization, deformation ageing;
superplasticity;
formation of structure and properties of alloys and surface layer;
behaviour of materials in service and processing;
profitability of materials.
