The course "Foreign Language (English)" comprises two stages: "General English" and "English for professional purposes".
"General English" (1, 2 terms) involves reviewing, systematization and expansion of the students’ knowledge obtained at secondary and high school. The students learn words and phrases used for everyday and social communication, study the most common grammar structures of the English language.
The correlation between the activities (speaking – 40%, listening – 20%, reading – 30%, writing – 10%) may vary according to the needs of the group. The course entrance requirement is knowledge of elementary English grammar and vocabulary.
"English for professional purposes" (3, 4 terms) is devoted to professional language learning as well as to training basic professional communication skills. The students study professional vocabulary, form and develop their abilities of presenting results of their research activities in English. The students also learn how to work with special literature: annotate and review various information resources.
The correlation between different types of activities are as follows: reading – 30%, speaking and listening – 40%, annotating and reviewing – 30%.
