Afonasov Alexei Ivanovich was born on September 1, 1931. In 1953 he graduated from the Tomsk Electromechanical Institute of Railway Engineers and received degree as an engineer of Railways. After graduation he worked as an locomotive driver assistant and then as a senior engineer of the Tomsk railroad Office. In 1961 he went to work in the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, in 1970 he defended his thesis on "The contact phenomena and tool wear during titanium alloys turning" and in 1974 he was promoted to associate professor. He is currently working in position of associate professor of TAMP department.

Family: wife, son, two grandchildren.

Hobbies: fishing, boating, gardening.
